How to get a WhatsApp template approved first time

Most template rejections are one of five things, and none of them appears in the rejection notice. Knowing them turns a two-day loop into a single submission.

The limits, before you write

Body 1,024 characters. Header 60. Footer 60. Button text 20. At most ten quick replies, and at most two call-to-action buttons. These are hard limits — a template one character over is rejected, not truncated.

The variable rules

Variables are {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}} and they must run in order with no gaps. {{1}} followed by {{3}} is rejected, and the error names no field. A body cannot start or end with a variable either — with the value empty the message would begin or end mid-sentence, which is exactly what Meta is guarding against.

Two variables next to each other with nothing between them is also rejected, for the same reason.

Start from the library and you may skip review entirely

Meta publishes a library of pre-approved templates for common cases — delivery updates, payment reminders, appointment confirmations. Used unmodified, a library template inherits that approval and goes live almost immediately. Change one word and it becomes an ordinary submission with an ordinary review. That trade-off is worth making deliberately rather than discovering.

The edit budget you will hit

One edit per template per 24 hours, and ten per 30 days. People spend the daily one on a typo and then cannot fix the real problem until tomorrow. Any tool worth using shows the remaining budget before you open the editor, not as a 429 after you press save.

Editing a live template also sends every WhatsApp account's copy of it back to review, and the old wording keeps sending until the new one is approved.

Approval is per WhatsApp account, not per business

There is no shared template pool at Meta. A template approved on one WhatsApp Business Account does not exist on your second one. A business with five portfolios has five copies of every template, each with its own review state — so "is my template live?" has five answers, and creation is capped at 100 per account per hour, which is the real bottleneck when onboarding at scale.

The five rejections nobody explains

A gap in the variable numbering
{{1}} then {{3}} — usually after deleting a middle variable. Renumber so they run 1, 2, 3. A good editor catches this before you submit.
Marketing content in a utility template
A delivery update that ends "and here is 10% off your next order" is a marketing template. Meta re-categorises it, you pay the marketing rate, and repeated attempts damage your quality rating.
A URL that does not match the business
A shortened link, or a domain unrelated to the verified business, is a common rejection. Use your own domain.
Placeholder or example content left in
"Hi {{1}}, this is a test" gets rejected. So does lorem ipsum, and so does an example URL. Reviewers read the template as a customer would.
The template is unused for twelve months
Not a rejection but the same outcome: Meta auto-archives an unused template after 12 months and deletes it 28 days later, unrecoverably. A seasonal template you use once a year is exactly the one at risk, so send it to yourself before the clock runs out.

Common questions

How long does WhatsApp template approval take?
Usually minutes to a few hours, occasionally up to 24. A template taken from Meta's pre-approved library and used unmodified is effectively instant. If yours has been pending for more than a day, it is more likely to be under manual review — which usually means something in it looked promotional.
